The Summer Palace in Beijing is probably the place that Genny and I enjoyed the most. It may have been because we didn't have high expectations for it (like Tiananmen Square), but the lake and walk was serene and pretty.
The tourists congregated by the North entrance, but I'd recommend a walk around the lake.
There is an old and new Summer Palace, but we only managed the new one. From what we hear, the old one has lost its history in China's attempt to make everything modern.
On the trip around the lake, there is a bridge to a small island in the middle. The bridge has 500 stone lions carved into it. Other bridges have extreme arches to (I'd guess) allow larger boats through. This may have been in older times though, as the lake was pretty barren when we went.
