Iraq's Pleasure Marriages

"Pleasure Marriages" are popular in Saudi also.They sign a piece of paper and go to Bahrain for a few weeks with this temporary "wife". When the vacation is over, so is the "marriage". This place is unbelievable. They have legalized prostitution and think it's permitted by the prophet Mohammed. The last example in the article is about a man who falls in love w/a widow and this is the only way to be together...to renew year after year their pleasure marriage. The obvious question is why can't they make it acceptable to marry divorced and widowed women??? It's just so screwed up!

The whole gulf behaves like this for one matter or another. The only one that sticks to its principles is Saudi. And unfortunately, that's a scary place. In Egypt, they have many different types of "marriages" or contracts. Each of them have different terms which can be used for a variety of choices. Someone powerful in the government leans on the fatwa issuer (forgot the name), and it becomes islamic law. In Dubai, they were going to place a casino in the Burj Al-Arab because in the Quran it says something like you shall not gamble on this earth. So they say that since the Burj Al-Arab was made from land-reclamation and not actual land, it is exempt. You can probably make similar arguments for airplanes and boats. In the US we do it for riverboat casinos. But the principle is still there. In Dubai, they didn't go forward with it because one Sheikh paid another Sheikh 1 Billion Dollars to leave the matter alone. A billion bucks! However, in Bahrain - they're building a casino based on the exact same principles.

I love that they call them "pleasure marriages" to distinguish them from traditional, presumably pleasureless, marriages.

Genny, I know I'm a bit behind but this was such an interesting blog! :) Well I also wanted to wish you a happy birthday today! This journal entry encourages ignorance about Islam, and I suggest doing a bit more research on the religion of Islam, instead of highlighting obscure cultural practices (that have nothing to do with Islam). So called pleasure marriages are not recognized by 85% of Muslims (Sunni Muslims). Even among Shias this is an outdated practice and has been outlawed by prominent legal scholars. FYI, to the first posters, an issuance of a fatwa does not make Islamic law, only very learned scholars can issue a fatwa and it is well accepted that there are only a handful of these in the world today. For the future, I suggest you distinguish between the real Islam and the one created by ignorant people.
