We've been watching the World Cup in all sorts of locales for the last two weeks. Everything from local sheesha bars to hotels to the Internet to the malls.
Each one has it's own curiosities.
The mall is weird because you're in a food court with a hundred random people watching TV.
The sheesha bars are odd because no one eats or drinks anything. They just sit there and watch the game and then leave.
The hotels are unusual because they are all expats of some sort from some random country. So you end up meeting people that are die-hard Czech fans or the like.
The Internet isn't my favorite place to watch TV, but if you're bored at work, you can watch the games on TVU Player with pretty good quality.
Anyways, we watched the last USA game at the Hard Rock Cafe, Kuwait. Suffice it to say, the population was pro-US. It helped that the game was exciting and was a "moral victory" for the US.
Now we look forward to the next game against Ghana. The US can make it to the round of 16 if they win AND:
"
1. Italy defeats the Czech Republic; or
2. Italy ties the Czech Republic 0-0 or 1-1 AND the United States beats Ghana by at least four goals; or
3. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by five or more goals; or
4. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by four goals AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Czechs do in their tiel or
5. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is six or more; or
6. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Italians do in their loss; or
7. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores exactly two more goals than the Italians do in their loss AND the Americans win a drawing of lots by FIFA." - from SoccerAmerica
I'd give them a 30% chance of making it.
Tradesports gives the US a 17.5% chance of qualifying.
Ghana has a 58.95% chance of qualifying
Italy has a 86.65% chance of qualifying
Czechoslavakia has a 38% chance of qualifying.
Here's to watching more TV.
