Here's a picture of Kuwait (click to see the rest of the pictures) from the hotel room. It looks great and all until you actually step outside. The first time I walked outside during the day I could literally feel my skin burn. There was a breeze but even the wind is hot here. After the initial shock it does get slightly better. I can bear to walk outside during the day for about 5-7 minutes and feel fine...just enough to go around the corner to the market. At night it is still hot (~95-100) but you can sit outside and sit by the water. After about 30 minutes I start to sweat and somehow Ank is not sweating. So maybe after a few more months I'll get used to it too.
One of the frustrating things about Kuwait is the lack of maps. No one seems to know how to get any where besides the major malls. We spent 50 minutes finding a noodle place last night...no maps online, the restaurant people can't give directions and the conceirge at the hotel has no idea either. The locals call the roads one name and expats call them by another name. The roads twist and turn and lead you through "roundabouts" which aren't really round. Thank goodness Ankur knows his way around otherwise before you know it we'd be in Iraq or Saudi.
The hotel has a great gym and indoor pool so we're on a strict workout schedule. I haven't worked out this many days in a row since the wedding. It feels fantastic and now I have a workout buddy! I could get used to this vacation life...eat, workout, read, sleep, eat... :)
Here are some things we've seen in Kuwait:
Sharq Mall and Fish Market - Large beautiful mall on the water with a small fish/fruit market on the side. The outside is great to walk around and see all the boats. The fish market is clean and surprisingly organized but I wish it was bigger w/more local food and crafts. The inside is the same as any other mall.
Hilton Resort - Fantastic pool and 2km beach but super expensive.
Green Island - Nice park and beach area but too hot outside to really explore.
Marina Mall - Just another mall.
Local Souq area - This place was too crowded with ghetto shops and scary people. The only good thing was that Ank got a good haircut for $3.50.
Write me...I'm bored!
Genny!
